Remember the Titans rated PG-13

Suggested Reading:
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
A Judy Bloom mystery novel
A Hardy Boys mystery novel

Family Activity:

  • Parents can talk with their children about ways to keep a clear head in a difficult situation. Emotional control is often difficult for children. Teach them to take a deep breath and count to ten when they get angry with someone.

 Class Activity:

  • Design a word search appropriate to your student’s grade level. Have the words in the word search describe one of three similar objects and place those three objects on display when you hand out the word search. Include some extra words in the word bank and tell your students how many words are actually in the word search. The extra words should make it impossible to guess which item is being described without doing the word search.

High School Activity:

  • For centuries philosophers tried to deduce human nature by thinking in abstract and general terms. They were trying to find human nature by examining the most common attributes of the human race. Can human nature be discovered this way, or is it more evident in the daily acts of individuals?

  • Discuss the proper balance of emotion and logic in making life decision.

Quotes:

Most people would rather die than think: many do.
---Bertrand Russell

Every good thought you think is contributing its share to the ultimate result of your life.
---Grenville Kleiser

Good thoughts bear good fruit, bad thoughts bear bad fruit -- and man is his own gardener.
---James Allen

---Benjamin Disraeli

A man is not idle because he is absorbed in thought. There is a visible labor and there is an invisible labor.
---Victor Hugo

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.
---Aristotle

All that we are is the result of what we have thought. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him. If a man speaks or acts with a pure thought, happiness follows him, like a shadow that never leaves him.
---Buddha

As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.
---Henry David Thoreau

For many, negative thinking is a habit, which over time, becomes an addiction... A lot of people suffer from this disease because negative thinking is addictive to each of the Big Three -- the mind, the body, and the emotions. If one doesn't get you, the others are waiting in the wings.
---Peter McWilliams

Thoughts have power... you can make your world or break your world by your thinking.
---Susan L. Talyor

The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get old ones out.
---Dee Hock

He presents me with what is always an acceptable gift who brings me news of a great thought before unknown. He enriches me without impoverishing himself.
---Christian Nestell Bovee

The universe is change; our life is what our thoughts make it.
---Marcus Aelius Aurelius

Let any man examine his thoughts, and he will find them ever occupied with the past or the future. We scarcely think at all of the present; or if we do, it is only to borrow the light which it gives for regulating the future. The present is never our object; the past and the present we use as means; the future only is our end. Thus, we never live, we only hope to live.
---Blaise Pascal

Alas, we make a ladder of our thoughts, where angels step, but sleep ourselves at the foot; our high resolves look down upon our slumbering acts.
---Letitia E. Landon

All the significant breakthroughs were breaks with the old way of thinking."
--Thomas Kuhn

So convenient a thing it is to be a reasonable creature, since it enables one to find or make a reason for everything one intends to do.”
---Benjamin Franklin

"The significant problems we face today cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them."
--Albert Einstein

“Many are destined to reason wrongly; others, not to reason at all; and others, to persecute those who do reason.”
---Voltaire

“Reason can in general, do more then blind force.”
---Gallus

“Reason is the wise man’s guide, example the fool’s.”
---Welsh Proverb

"Think, think, think."
---Winnie the Pooh

Discovery consists of looking at the same thing as everyone else and thinking something different.
---Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

You cannot always control your circumstances, but you can always control your own thoughts.
---Charles E. Popplestone

Words are things and a small drop of ink
Falling like dew, upon a thought, produces
That which makes thousands, perhaps millions think.
